EARTH'S DAY HALF w/ SUB-SOLAR POINT

At any instant, Earth's Sub-Solar Point is the point on our globe "directly under the Sun."  Said in another way, it is where the Sun appears directly overhead, such that its rays strike Earth's surface perpendicularly.  Always changing, Earth's Sub-Solar Point is the center-point of the half of our planet that is illuminated (Earth's Day Half), and it circles the globe to the west once each day.  In addition, once each year it gradually migrates north and then south over the equator, its yearly northernmost and southernmost limits respectively defining the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.  This means that the Sun's apparent path over Earth is actually a very flat ever-changing spiral!  In the image above, Earth's Sub-Solar Point is plotted at the instant that this page loaded.  Directly opposite Earth's Sub-Solar Point is the center-point of Earth's  Night Half.  Also check out:  Earth: Day & Night, The Sun's Skypath  and   Earth Tilt, Sunset & Sunset.
